As we build towards the first ever Vocational Celebration Day on 6 August 2026, we’re proud to share the stories of some incredible vocational heroes who have been nominated through EAL’s Celebrating a Vocational Hero campaign.
From tutors and trainers to mentors and assessors, these individuals are making a lasting impact on learners every day, opening doors, building confidence, and helping shape the skilled workforce the UK needs for the future. Their dedication, encouragement and passion for vocational learning continue to inspire the next generation across engineering, manufacturing, construction and beyond.
Nominated by her colleague, our first Vocational Hero is Lisa Laidlaw, Managing Director at Angus Training Group Ltd. Here is why she was nominated:
“Lisa Laidlaw is an exceptional leader whose vision, integrity and commitment make her an outstanding candidate for this award. As Managing Director, Lisa consistently demonstrates a rare blend of strategic foresight and genuine care for people. Under her leadership, the organisation has not only achieved remarkable growth but has also strengthened its culture, values, and long‑term resilience.
“Lisa leads by example. She champions innovation, encourages collaboration, and empowers her teams to think boldly and work with purpose. Her ability to bring clarity to complex challenges has been instrumental in navigating organisational change while maintaining stability and confidence across the workforce. Colleagues consistently praise her open‑door approach, her willingness to listen, and her talent for creating an environment where everyone feels valued.
“Beyond operational success, Lisa is deeply committed to community impact and ethical business practices. She actively supports initiatives that promote inclusivity, wellbeing, and professional development, ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all.
“Lisa has also supported young people who have been out of work or economically inactive in our area and created a course to train them in Wind turbines giving them a chance a successful future in the future, something really close to her heart.”
Vocational Celebration Day was created by Enginuity and EAL to champion the value of vocational education, challenge outdated perceptions, and celebrate the people and pathways driving the UK forward. This story just a snapshot of the extraordinary individuals working across the sector every day.
As momentum continues to grow ahead of August 2026, we encourage everyone to join the celebration by sharing stories, supporting learners, and recognising the vocational heroes helping others succeed.
