This is an important notification regarding the planned retirement of the EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment) (501/1605/8).
This NVQ qualification (1605) has been operational since 2010 and has formed part of apprenticeship frameworks in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It is also used as an industry route for adults/non-apprentices.
Working with the industry body, The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP), the last date for registration on this qualification will be 31 October 2026. However, the following two qualifications will be available for non-apprentice learners from 1 May 2026:
This means that adult learners and non-apprentices can study the most current industry-recognised qualification, and progress to the relevant AM Test and work toward an ECS Gold Card.
It can also benefit our Centres in rationalising the delivery of electrical courses between apprentices and non-apprentices. Having the AM test outside the qualification will also provide a simpler claiming process.
The two qualifications (601/7345/2 and 610/2859/9) will have an updated assessment strategy (applicable to apprentices and non-apprentices) to support holistic and best practice assessment with direct observation across a wider range of workplace performance units, rather than the current focus on health and safety.
The requirement for one in-person assessment remains, and others can be conducted virtually and live-streamed.
To support adult learners and non-apprentices prior to enrolling on the EAL Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification 601/7345/2 or the EAL Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings 610/2859/9, there will be new information and documentation.
As per our recent communication, we will also update our electrical qualifications in line with the BS 7671 4th Amendment, which is expected to be published in 2026.
We will provide further updates on these developments in the coming months. We are committed to ensuring these qualifications are cost-effective to assess, manageable to deliver, and industry valid; and look forward to engaging with you on our dedicated webinars (which we will announce in the Autumn).
