To mark International Women in Engineering Day 2025, we’re celebrating an outstanding achievement by one of our very own learners, who was named Learner of the Year at the prestigious SPARKS Female Skills Competition.
Gracie Donaghy, an electrical installation apprentice from Weston College, and working with Wessex Water, impressed judges with her technical skill, attention to detail, and professionalism under pressure, ultimately taking home the top prize at the live competition in Coventry.
Organised by SPARKS Magazine, the annual Female Skills Competition aims to shine a spotlight on the incredible young women training to enter the electrical industry.
As a leading awarding organisation for the engineering and building services sectors, EAL is proud to support learners who are breaking down barriers and leading the way in underrepresented sectors.
Reflecting on the experience, Gracie said: “Competing in the SPARKS Female Skills Competition highlighted to me just how beneficial being part of the women in engineering community can be.
Being part of this community has allowed me to develop relationships with other like-minded individuals and hear their stories surrounding work and their apprenticeships, many of these stories relating to my own experiences.
It shows that there are always other women out there you can speak to going through the same process as you, and I hope this community continues to grow!”
Her success highlights the importance of representation, support networks, and visibility in helping more women thrive in engineering and skilled trades.
Competitions like these not only celebrate individual excellence but also help challenge outdated stereotypes and inspire future generations of women in engineering.”
As the sector works to address skills gaps and support a more diverse and inclusive workforce, EAL remains committed to empowering learners from all backgrounds to succeed.
